Travelling by public transportation is very easy and convenient in Zurich. There are different possibilities to reach ETH and the Plant Pathology Group from Zurich airport or Zurich main station. Find more details below.
After reclaiming baggage, follow the signs "Bahn/Railway" to ticket counters and machines. There are English instructions on the machine; follow them or simply press the left (red) key at the bottom where it says "Zurich City" (make sure that the display shows "1 Std"). The machine prompts for 6.80 CHF and accepts coins as well as 20.- CHF. banknotes and gives change. The ticket is valid during the next 1 hour for any train to Zurich as well as for the trams and buses in the city (streetcar, Strassenbahn). Take an escalator down to the platforms. Trains to city centre leave approx. every 10 minutes and take about 10 minutes to reach main station (main station or Zurich HB).
If you plan to stay the whole day, a day ticket (valid 24 hours) for 13.60 CHF is more suitable.
By tram (from the “Zurich Airport” tram stop)
Tram no. 10 (towards Bahnhofplatz/HB) as far as the “ETH/Universitätsspital” stop. The tram runs every 7 to 15 minutes between 6 o’clock in the morning and 11 o’clock at night.

By rail
If you wish to travel from the airport to the city centre (Central Station), you are recommended to use the S-Bahn or mainline services. The trains depart from the “Zurich Airport” station
Journey time: approx. 10 minutes
You will require a ticket valid for 3 zones.
If you are spending the whole day in Zurich, it is worth buying a day pass (valid for 24 hours). A 24h ticket costs only twice as much as a regular one-way ticket.
At the main station (Hauptbahnhof) walk to the head of the train and follow any signs to "Bahnhofstrasse". Once outside the station walk about 50 m up the road to the tram stop on the left-hand side. If you arrived by train and haven't yet got a tram ticket, you must now buy one from the blue ticket machine. Depending on your needs, you can buy a day ticket for 8.80 CHF which is valid for 24 hours for all trams and buses in the main zone (no. 110) of the city or, if all you need is to reach the ETH Zentrum, press the yellow button and put in 2.70 CHF.
From the “Bahnhofstrasse/HB” stop: Tram no. 6 (towards the Zoo) as far as the “ETH/Universitätsspital” stop. You are now standing exactly opposite the main building of ETH (ETH Zentrum) and there is an information desk in the main hall on your left as you enter the building. Journey time: approx. 6 minutes
From the “Bahnhofplatz/HB” stop: Tram no. 10 (towards the Airport or Oerlikon station) as far as the “ETH/Universitätsspital” stop or Tram Nr. 3 (towards Klusplatz) as far as the “Central” stop (1 stop), from “Central” by Polybahn (departs every three minutes) to the Polyterrasse. Journey time: approx. 8 minutes
From the “Bahnhofplatz/HB” stop:
Tram no. 10 (towards the Airport or Oerlikon station) as far as the stop “ETH/Universitätsspital”. You are now standing exactly opposite the LFW building. After exiting the tram on the right side, you will be facing a building with a greenhouse attached. This is the LFW building (see also picture on top of this page). Walk straight forward, cross the street, turn right and walk about 20 meters to the main entrance of the LFW building. Enter the building, walk up the steps to the ground floor (B floor), at the top of the steps turn left and walk 15 meters to my office, B16, left side across the women’s bathroom. From Tram 10 stop ETH/Universitätspital.
Exit the tram and cross the street in the direction away from the LFW building. Turn right onto the sidewalk and walk about 150 m down Sonneggstrasse. The Hotel Sunnehus is on the left side of the street.
